Status: Permanent

The program’s objective was to promote the monitoring of local climate, water levels, sedimentological processes and seismological events that occur in the region in which the reservoir is located. The works were done during the river phase at the construction’s start and during the reservoir phase following the installation of the Plant. According to results gathered, some programs continue during the Plant operation phase, in order to complement them. This BEP is divided into subtopics, listed below:

Local Weather Monitoring - It aimed at detecting possible changes in meteorological parameters following the formation of the reservoir. The works were developed between September 2001 and December 2003 through an agreement with UNITINS/UFT (Federal University of Tocantins), showing results without relevant changes to date. Considering the weather station implanted in the campus of the UFT by INVESTCO, the University can promote weather monitoring in the region and the data obtained can be made available to the scientific community.

Water Level Monitoring - Its specific purpose is to evaluate the spatial and temporal variations of water levels along the reservoir and its main affluents that directly affect the water volume that reaches the lake. The monitoring continues to be promoted and results are used by the plant’s operations team, in addition to assisting the National Water Agency (abbreviated in Portuguese as ANA) and the National Electric Energy Agency (abbreviated in Portuguese as ANEEL), through Resolution 003/10.

Sedimentological Monitoring - It monitored the sediment deposit evolution and evaluated the solid discharges in the reservoir, corresponding to the river basin contributor. The works occurred from July 2001 to July 2004, through a service agreement with the company WW Consultoria e Tecnologia Ltda. Currently, with the Plant operation, new monitoring works are held and comply with ANA and ANEEL’s resolution 003/10.

Seismological Monitoring - It evaluated the natural seismic activity in the reservoir’s area of influence for comparison with the level of seismic activity obtained during and after its filling, which enabled the verification of possible incidences of earthquakes. The works occurred from January 2001 to February 2004 through a contract with WW Consultoria e Tecnologia Ltda. This monitoring continues in accordance with the Plant operational phase and is being carried out by the University of Brasília´s Seismological Observatory from a seismic station installed in the Serra do Lajeado and by radio with the local stations’ operators daily between 7:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m.
