In order to ensure adequate treatment of owners and residents in the areas surrounding the reservoir, Investco implemented a program intended for families, executing socioeconomic records, negotiations discussion, and their implementation, focusing on possible treatment options. The program had direct participation from Ibama, Naturatins, State Public Ministry, Federal Public Ministry, representatives of the impacted population and the Movement of the Affected by Dams (abbreviated in Portuguese as MAB). The options available were: indemnification, barter, rent, resettlement, relocation, and self-relocation.

The most important action was one that involved resettlements, in which the families participated in the choice of the villages’ locations. The resettlements were implemented observing the replacement of existing services and infrastructures in the areas of origin. The houses, all plastered, were built in different models, with 2 to 4 rooms, according to the family composition or residence size in the area of origin. The buildings have electricity, septic tanks, sinks and running water.

This program focused exclusively on the village of Lajeadinho, in Miracema, and some families living in the surroundings, near the construction area and construction site and was the first relocation program implemented. The Program proposed the collective relocation of the village of Lajeadinho also the feasibility for the relocation to the urban area, as well as indemnification in cash. There was a broad acceptance for urban relocation.

Among the actions executed in this PEB, there are the resettlement of 22 families to the urban area of Miracema, one family to the urban area of Lajeado and two families to the resettlement Rural Canto da Serra de Lajeado. The compensation for 35 properties was also fulfilled in the municipalities of Miracema and Lajeado, located in the vicinity of the old settlement, near the construction site. Also, the resettled families’ furniture was transported to the new residences. The relocated families also received training and the provision of agricultural supplies.

The actions defined in the program were completed in the approved period; however, during the program implementation, the interest of some families in farming in a rural area was verified.

Thus, Investco loaned the families involved an area of its property, known as Mearim, to the rural resettlement of Mundo Novo, whose domain is being passed on to interested parties.
